Tim Duffy K3LR: Grounding & Bounding

December Meeting: Technical Presentation

Tim has been an active contest operator for 49 years. He has hosted over 145 different operators as part of the K3LR multi operator DX contest efforts since 1992 – which have made over 800,000 QSOs. Tim served on the ARRL Contest Advisory Committee as a member and multi-year Chairman. K3LR has
been an active member of the CQ Contest Committee for 31 years. Tim was the Atlantic Division Technical Achievement award winner in 1998. He was moderator of the Dayton Contest Forum for 10 years and has been moderator of the Hamvention Antenna forum for 38 years. Annual Picnic & Election a Success!

We hunted, voted and ate. Most importantly we saw some friends for the first time in almost two years. We saw Delbert and his XYL for the first time since 2019. We also met David who joined the club yesterday evening and is working towards his Technician license.

Described by Tom Schaefer, NY4I as the “first winter field day” the native Floridians hovered around the hot grill to stay warm in the damp 60 degree morning air!

Steve Foy, N4FOY returned from the fox hunt victorious with a big smile and fox in hand.

June Meeting Summary

On June 5th, we had our first in person meeting since Feb/Mar 2020! It was great to see those who attended! We tried using Zoom for those out of state or choosing not to attend in person. It wasn’t without some technical issues, but we made it work. Improvements to come for the next meeting!

Thirteen people attended in person, one of whom was Ray Dabkowski,W8RD. He visited our club and decided to join!

If  you did not know, Honeymoon Island and Caladesi Islands were once connected. It was called Hog Island until the 1921 hurricane cut a channel thru the island forming what we know today as Hurricane Pass.

April 2021 Meeting – Node-RED

The next monthly UPARC meeting is at 10:00 AM on Saturday April 3rd, 2021. This is an online Zoom meeting. Besides our usual reports on various club activities, we have a technical presentation on Node-RED presented by Tom NY4I.

Node-RED is an open-source technology created by IBM to help automate the Internet of Things (IoT). But since IoT is just controlling various pieces of hardware, Node-RED lends itself quite well to controlling ham radio gear. By creating graphical “flows”, nodes are linked together to talk to radios, amplifiers, rotor controllers, weather stations, web-based power switches, relays, etc. Most people install this on a Raspberry Pi but it can also run on Windows.
