Winter Field Day 2022 Dry Run Fun

Some of the Field Day planning team members spent time at the Clearwater Fire Training Center today. We verified radios and laptops worked together for logging, verified the laptops could connect with the network, walked the campus for our new members and reviewed the list of items we still need for a successful event.

In attendance and in no particular order were: Jeff NE4C, Ryan KO4KGP, Alan W4UB, Jack N4KIN, Dee W4DCH, Fred W2SUB, Tom NY4I and Steve N4FOY.

Jeff Palmer NE4C took Ryan KO4KGP and Fred W2SUB to the top of the short fire training tower for a aerial view of the campus but we didn’t get any pictures of that.

Steve Foy N4FOY also provided an impromptu training … Read the rest

A Field Day For Hams

If you worked Summer Field Day last year you may recall a woman walking around with a microphone. That was Mary Beth Toole creator of a podcast called sonic earth expeditions. A Field Day For Hams has been posted. It is 33 minutes long but worth the listen I think. It would also be good for someone who has never worked at Field Day. She only references SPARC in the podcast but you might hear yourself in there somewhere!

UPARC visits SPARCfest

SPARC, the St. Petersburg Amateur Radio Club held it’s first SPARCfest since the COVID shutdown at Freedom Lake Park in Pinellas Park, FL. There were lots of items to look at and SPARC was unloading a ton of equipment.

The author found a sentimental item that he picked up. Not especially practical in our county with digital and P25 but hey it works so for $10 why not.

Several members of UPARC attended the event.

Alan picked up a fiberglass lineman’s pushup pole for $30 from a guy who paid $20 less than 5 minutes earlier. We all wanted one but there were not enough to go around. Julie NF1T picked up one as well.

Always fun … Read the rest

Annual Picnic & Election a Success!

We hunted, voted and ate. Most importantly we saw some friends for the first time in almost two years. We saw Delbert and his XYL for the first time since 2019. We also met David who joined the club yesterday evening and is working towards his Technician license.

Described by Tom Schaefer, NY4I as the “first winter field day” the native Floridians hovered around the hot grill to stay warm in the damp 60 degree morning air!

Steve Foy, N4FOY returned from the fox hunt victorious with a big smile and fox in hand.

Jack Kinney, N4KIN called the business meeting to order. The first order of business was to thank Jeff DeGrasse, K4JJD for his service as UPARC treasurer … Read the rest
